Following are the basic php configuration requirements for phpwebsite 1.6 +

PHP version 5.1.0 or higher
session.auto_start must be set to 0
GD image library
either fileinfo or mime_magic support
cannot be run in safemode
PHP memory limit should be 10MB or greater
register_globals off
magic quotes off
